Biography

My name is Derrick Eichele, I am currently a senior at North Dakota State University (NDSU) enrolled in Biological Science Education and Sociology with an Emphasis in Anthropology.

My anthropology experiences include folklore collections from the Great Plains performed for a Folklore and Culture class instructed by Dr. Timothy Kloberdanz, professor of Anthropology at NDSU. An ethnography of a school board written for the Cultural Anthropology course at NDSU taught by Dr. Bill Brunton, professor of Anthropology at NDSU, retired. I also have worked at the Archaeology Technologies Lab (ATL) for the year and a half under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey T. Clark, professor of Anthropology at NDSU. My work conducted at the ATL lab includes digitally capturing and modeling archaelogical and material artifacts for display on the Digital Archive Network for Anthropology (DANA).

I was awarded with the participation in the GraSUS grant for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 academic year. The GraSUS grant is a National Science Foundation (NSF) supported research project providing graduate and undergraduate students, combined with secondary public school instructors, the opportunity to enhance science and mathematic instruction in the area schools. The 2001-2002 academic year I had the privelage to work with Mr. Jefri Jones and Mrs. Denise McCarthy at Ben Franklin Junior High School. Presently, I am working with Mr. Mike Finneseth and Mr. Greg Unruh at Fargo North High School in the Science Department.

Melissa Zuroff, a 2002 graduate in Anthropology at NDSU, and myself presented a paper entitled "3D Visualization in Anthropology" at the University of Minnesota's 24th annual Undergraduate Anthropology Conference (May 2002) and were awarded the Best Biological Anthropology paper at the conference. This paper discussed the use of 3D laser scanning of Archaeological artifacts for display on a web-based database, the use of Virtual Reality in reconstruction of archaelogical sites and the reconstruction and animation of a Neandertal thumb cast for analysis on hand movements and biomechanics.

My future endeavors include graduating from North Dakota State University with Bachelor's degrees in Biological Sciences in Education and Sociology with an emphasis in Anthropology and attending graduate school in Anthropology.
