My
name is Diana Swenson-Siegel and I am 27 years old. I am a
Graduate student at NDSU working on my Masters degree in Social
Science
have explored a wide range of careers in the
last 10 years which include, midwifery, catering, architectural
drafting, forensic anthropology, and finally cultural anthropology.
I began my undergraduate career at the University
of North Dakota, where I studied under Dr. John Williams.
I worked in the Casting Labratory in the summer of 1995. Myself
and one other student made casts of skeletal material which
were to be repatriated the following fall.
That same summer I had my first field experience.
A missing person report led to a survey of the Cheyenne river,
which runs through West Fargo, North Dakota. Several miles
north of West Fargo a team of divers, anthropologists and
police officers dragged the bottom of the river, John Williams
took his student anthropologists into the field with him.
I continued working with Dr. Williams that year
and the next on several cases which included one forensic
investigation, two field surveys and other small projects
.
The winter of 1996-1997 Grand Forks had a very
difficult winter which resulted in a flood in the spring.
I had just given birth to my second child, so we decided to
leave Grand Forks for greener pastures.
In 1999, after brief stints as a drafter, and
apprentice midwife, I decided to go back to school to complete
my bachelors degree. It was at North Dakota State University
in Fargo that I changed my focus from physical anthropology
to cultural anthropology.
I graduated in the summer of 2001 and was accepted
to graduate school that same year. I am now completing my
first year. My thesis will focus on the relationships between
home birth midwives and their apprentice in several situations
and how they cope when a hospital transfer occurs.
I have also been involved in the projects that
you can view on this web site,
Come on and see what I've done!
